Just Not Happy With This One

Today I'm going to share with you our guest bedroom.  I have resisted showing you this room because, well, I'm just not happy with it.  Now, don't get me wrong, it has come a LONG way from where we began.

These pictures were taken right before we started the remodeling project.
As you can see, the office was in here - along with a bed.  That's about it.

Mountain Man used this room as his "staging" area before we did the remodel - see his shoes and suitcase on the bed?  Don't ask me why - Why do men do half of what they do?

Anyway, the only major thing we did in this room was close up a door.

Now, once again, please excuse the quality of the next few pictures - they are pictures of pictures - so the quality stinks, but I wanted to show you what I mean.

This is a picture taken from the living room looking toward the guest bedroom.

Do you notice something strange (beside the ugly cornice board on the sliding doors)?

How about this one?

Well, there are three doors leading into the guest bedroom.
One that leads into the hall/bathroom, one into the room, and then another one into the room.

Really?  Three?

Who needs three doors into one room that is about 10 by 12?

This is the door that we decided to close up.

(BTW, this was a pocket door - which we removed and Mountain Man used it to replace the regular door that lead to the bedroom/bathroom.

This shows where the door was from the bedroom side of the room.
The other door is the one off the hall and bathroom.

Right after we finished the remodel this is the bedroom.

Not much there - a bed a couple of lamps, ugly nightstands.

At least the blinds matched and the quilt on the bed was one my mom made.

However, this just wasn't "cutting it".

So, we updated some things.

First we bought a night stand.

Then we also got the cube thingy from IKEA to use as a night stand on the opposite side of the bed.

Then, at a garage sale a few months ago I found this shelf.  It was ugly brown, but I thought that we (meaning Mountain Man) could paint it white and mount it over the bed.

So, after we (Mountain Man) painted the shelf and mounted it - we needed to decorate it (meaning me).

My daughter (the mom-to-be) gave me this sign for Christmas a few years ago.  It is something that Mountain Man and I try to live by.

Then there is the dresser - another IKEA find.

The mirror was one that my daughter that lives in Atlanta gave us when we moved into the house.  It had a black frame, however, we (Mountain Man - do we see a pattern here?) painted it white.  So, much better.

Just a few things that we had on hand for the top of the dresser.

This is a painting that Mountain Man did last summer - yep, he painted it all by himself.

He is pretty talented huh?

Now, everything I've shown you so far - I'm pretty happy with.  There are a few things that could be "tweaked" some, but really - not too bad.

However, we move to the other side of the room.

Remember those ugly night stands.  Well, we haven't gotten rid of them they were just put together with another piece of the same furniture.

We hate it!

You see, this is going to be Lorelai's room when we are babysitting her.  So, we need to make room for her crib - and we hate these pieces.  We have looked at bookcases from IKEA, but we just can't decide what to use.

I know that these have GOT to go.

We still have to have a place for the television and some storage, but the crib will take up a lot of this wall.

.

Then there is this side of the room - I'm not happy with it either.  This table just doesn't go with the rest of the furniture.

I've talked to Mountain Man about painting it white, but I'm not sure I want to do that.

I've also thought about painting it the same blue as the dresser.

Then there is the lamp.

I've thought about painting it - not completely sold on that idea.

I've thought about doing a twine treatment - I'm not sure about that one.

So, you see my problem.

Half the room is okay - the other half not so much and I'm sorta stumped.

This summer (when we aren't on vacation, but before we start keeping the baby) I'll come up with the right solution.

When I do, I'll be sure to share.

You guys have any suggestions?

Hugs -

Carol

  1. I love the Ikea night stand (we've got the same ;o)). Can you turn the bed 90 degree to put it against the wall with the white mirror and then the crib between the windows? I would go with painting the little half round table white. Maybe just attach some coordinating burlap or felt flowers to the lampshade and leave as is otherwise? Can you donate the old night stands?
Have a great rest of the week,

    1. Hi Susanne - We can't turn the bed - the room isn't wide enough for the bed and the nightstands then with the crib - it just won't fit. The room is really narrow and long - we tried that before we did the remodeling with the other bed and everything was just too crowded. I think we are going to take the old nightstand and TV cabinet to a furniture consignment shop - someone told us that this is expensive furniture, but I wouldn't know. These pieces were given to us by my mom. I'm still working on the lamp idea, but it's just a lamp from Walmart - so if I decide to paint it or do the twine thing and it doesn't turn out - not a big expenditure. thanks for the ideas!

    2. I was planning on agreeing with the twine thing on the lamp:) I love the table the lamp is on and with the twine thing it will be beautiful

    3. Thanks Evelyn - I'm still seriously thinking about painting that table white - but I'm not sure Mountain Man will agree - We shall see who wins that one!

  2. Oh I just finished our guest bdrm. They seem to be the places that collect all the left over things and somehow it is almost impossible to put them together. Your room is looking good. Just keep tweaking, it will get there. Thanks tons for joining TTT. Hugs, Marty

    1. Hi Marty - Isn't that the truth about the guest bedroom getting all the "leftovers". Sometimes Mountain Man says that I get to impatient - I want everything perfect "Right NOW!". I'm working on that - I say that Mountain Man is teaching me patience everyday! Thanks for the encouragement!

  3. I'm impressed he did that giraffe himself! And I laughed out loud at "Why do men do half of what they do." Amen to that! :)

  4. Hi Erica - You know, I think that Mountain Man is more talented than he thinks he is (but don't tell him I said so!) - and I am so lucky that he can visualize my ideas and then bring them to life for me. However, there are times that I just don't understand the man! I guess that's what they mean when they say "Men are from Mars"!

  5. I have to live in a room for a while to finally get it tweaked the way I like it. I could never be an interior designer because they would have to put up with me living there for a while. Lol It will come to you when it comes:) I will be watching to see what you come up with. Thanks for supporting and sharing each week at Freedom Fridays!

    1. Oh Evelyn, I do know what you mean! So many times you think you want things one way, but after be in the room for awhile you realize that is not what you want at all. That's one of the reasons we waited to do the house remodel until we had been in the house almost nine months. Just had to live with it and see how we would use certain rooms.
Thanks for hosting the party every week!

  6. Carol, I don't like our guest room either. You have inspired me with your lovely transformation. I hope to do an update on ours soon. Thank you for sharing at the Thursday Favorite Things Blog Hop Hugs and wishes for a beautiful week ahead.

    1. Hi Katherine - I'm sure that your guest room is lovely! I'm happy with some things in our guest room but not with others - you know - you just have all the "left-overs" in the guest room. While we did buy some new things (the stuff from IKEA) there are some things that are pieces that we just didn't have a place for in any other room. I'm sure that we will get it together sometime soon - at least I hope so!

  10. I think it's coming along nicely, Carol. I'm sure you WILL come up with the perfect solution to make it exactly what you want it to be. And I wouldn't be surprised if it involves Mountain Man and paint. ;)

  12. I think your room looks very nice. I'm afraid I'm not much help with any great ideas to help you out. I have an entire room that I am stuck on. I have been working on it for months but just can't seem to get it exactly the way I want it so, I understand your situation. Your husband did a great job painting the giraffe. Hope to see you at the next party and keep in mind the Grill, BBQ and Picnic Party on June 17-23. Have a great weekend.---- Shannon
